How much does a home gym cost in the UK in 2026?

6 min read · Build Me Different

A home gym costs whatever you decide it costs. The useful question is how little you can spend and still get results, and where the money stops adding anything. Here are 2026 UK figures from two published price guides, and what we would actually buy.

The four price bands

  • Starter, under £200. A pair of adjustable dumbbells (around £65 for a 40kg set), a set of resistance bands (around £10), a wall-mounted pull-up bar (around £90) and a mat (£15–£20). Home Gym Advice's 2026 budget guide prices this bundle at under £200.
  • Foundation, around £350. The starter kit plus an adjustable bench (around £150). This is the point where you can do a proper full-body strength programme.
  • Serious, around £550. Swap the basic dumbbells for a heavier selectorised pair. Same guide, same year.
  • Complete, around £900. Add a rack and a barbell. You can now squat, bench and deadlift with real load.

What a full garage gym costs

Checkatrade's 2026 cost guide puts the average equipment spend for a fully kitted home gym at £9,275, before any building work. Their individual ranges: dumbbells and plates £300–£1,000, adjustable bench £80–£400, barbell and plates £200–£600, squat rack £200–£800, treadmill £600–£3,000, rowing machine £150–£2,500, exercise bike £100–£1,500, multi-gym £450–£6,000, and rubber floor mats £20–£60 per square metre. If you are converting a space, they quote around £250 a day for installation labour and roughly £37,500 for a 20m² extension.

Nobody needs that to get fit. Most of it is cardio machines and a multi-gym, and both are the least useful pounds you can spend if the goal is losing fat and getting stronger.

What actually matters

  • Adjustable dumbbells do 80% of the job. Buy the heaviest pair you can afford, because the cheap 20kg sets run out within a couple of months of proper training.
  • A bench is the second purchase, not the fifth. It turns dumbbells into a full programme: presses, rows, step-ups, split squats.
  • A pull-up bar is the cheapest way to train your back properly.
  • Skip the treadmill. The pavement is free and a £600 treadmill is the most-sold item on second-hand sites for a reason.

Home gym vs gym membership

A budget gym is £18–£32 a month (full breakdown here), so £216–£384 a year. A £350 foundation home setup pays for itself inside a year and then costs nothing. The gym still wins if you want heavy barbell work without spending £900, or if you know you will not train in a cold garage in January. Be honest about that one.

The bit the kit doesn't give you

Dumbbells do not tell you what to do with them. The reason home gyms end up as clothes horses is not the equipment, it is the lack of a plan and anyone checking you turned up. Our home workout plan with no gym is a free starting point, and the AI coach builds a progressive programme around exactly the kit you own for £19.99 a month, with the first 30 days free.

FAQs

What is the cheapest home gym that actually works?

Adjustable dumbbells, resistance bands and a mat — under £100 if you shop around in 2026. Add a bench when you can.

Is a home gym cheaper than a gym membership?

Over a year, usually yes. A £350 setup costs less than twelve months at a budget gym and you keep it. Over one month, no.

Do I need a treadmill?

No. Walking, running and stairs are free. Spend the money on weights.
