How much does an online personal trainer cost in the UK in 2026?
Online coaching has become the middle option between paying £45 an hour for in-person sessions and doing it all yourself. The prices are all over the place, so here is what the bands look like in 2026 and what you get for the money.
The price bands
- £40–£80 a month — the app-plus-templates tier. A written plan, a nutrition target, and a check-in form once a week. Usually the same programme sent to many clients with small tweaks.
- £100–£180 a month — the standard tier. A programme written for you, weekly video or message check-ins, form review if you send clips, adjustments as you go.
- £200–£400 a month — the high-touch tier. Daily messaging access, live video sessions, detailed nutrition, often a coach with a following.
- £500+ a month. Competition prep and named coaches. Not relevant for most people reading this.

- Your gym membership — still £20–£60 a month on top.
- Real-time form correction. You send a video, they reply later. That is fine for most lifts, but it is not the same as someone standing next to you.
- Quick responses. "Weekly check-in" often means one message a week and a reply within 48 hours. Read what response time is actually promised.
- Flexibility. Many coaches write a 4-week block and you follow it. If your shifts change on Tuesday, the plan does not.
Where online coaching is good
A decent online coach at £120 a month is genuinely better value than one in-person PT session a week at £180, if you are the kind of person who will follow a written plan. You get a programme built for you, someone to answer questions, and someone noticing when you go quiet. The accountability is real, even through a screen.
Where it falls down
The quality range is enormous, and the price does not tell you where a coach sits in it. A £150-a-month coach might have 60 clients and a virtual assistant doing the check-ins. Ask how many clients they have, who actually replies to messages, and what happens when your week goes sideways.
The comparison people are actually making
In 2026 the honest comparison is not online coach vs in-person. It is online coach vs AI coach. An AI coach writes the plan around your job, your kit and your days, rebuilds it when you log something different, and does the nutrition too, for £19.99 a month — with the first 30 days free. What it cannot do is watch you squat and tell you your knees are caving. A human coach can, sometimes, if you send the video. For most beginners and returners the AI does 90 per cent of the job at a tenth of the price, and the full AI vs human comparison goes through the other 10 per cent honestly.
FAQs
Is online personal training worth it?
At £100–£180 a month with a coach who genuinely writes and adjusts your plan, yes, for people who follow written instructions. At £40–£80 you are usually buying a template.
How do I check an online coach is legit?
Look for a Level 3 PT qualification as a minimum, ask how many clients they take, and ask for the name of a client you can speak to. Be wary of transformation photos as the only evidence.
Can I cancel online coaching?
Most are rolling monthly, but some tie you to 12 weeks. Ask before paying.
