How much weight can you lose in a month?
Honest answer first: a safe, keepable rate of fat loss is 0.5–1kg (1–2lb) a week, which is the NHS guideline. That is 2–4kg a month. Anyone promising you more is either talking about water or about something you will put back on.
Why the first week lies
Cut carbs and calories and the scale drops fast in week one — often 2–3kg. Most of that is water and glycogen, not fat. It comes back the first time you eat a normal meal, which is the point most people decide the diet "stopped working". It did not. Week one is not the rate; weeks two to four are.
What 2–4kg a month looks like
- Month 1: clothes slightly looser, scale down 2–4kg (more if you started heavier).
- Month 3: 6–12kg. A noticeable difference in photos and a belt notch or two.
- Month 6: 12–20kg. A different body, kept, with habits that survive a holiday.
Heavier starting weights lose faster at the beginning; the rate slows as you get lighter. That is normal, not a plateau.

Very low calorie diets lose muscle as well as fat, drop your energy, and make training miserable. Your body burns less, you feel worse, and the diet ends. The weight returns as fat, not muscle, so you finish worse than you started. Slow is not the cautious option; it is the option that works.
How to hit the safe rate
- A deficit of around 600 kcal a day — the NHS weight loss plan figure — gives roughly 0.5–1kg a week. Our calorie guide shows how to find your number.
- Protein high, so the loss is fat rather than muscle.
- Lift something two or three times a week. It tells your body to keep the muscle.
- Weigh daily, judge weekly. Daily numbers bounce by a kilo for no reason. The weekly average is the truth.
- Plan the week you actually have. Shifts, nights out, kids. The diet that assumes a perfect week fails by Thursday.
The people who keep it off
They did not find a better diet. They stayed at a sensible deficit long enough, kept training, and had something adjusting the plan when life changed. That last part is where most people fall over, and it is what the AI coach does: weekly check-ins, calories and meals adjusted to your real weigh-ins, workouts that fit your shifts. £19.99 a month, first 30 days free, and the free 7-day plan if you want to start smaller.
FAQs
Can you lose a stone in a month?
A stone is 6.35kg. At the safe rate it is closer to two months. Some people at heavier starting weights get near it in month one, mostly with water in the mix.
Is losing 1kg a week healthy?
Yes — it is the top of the NHS recommended range for most adults.
Why has my weight loss stopped after three weeks?
Usually the week-one water drop has finished and the real rate is showing. Check the weekly average, not the daily number, before changing anything.
