What the calculator does

Enter a distance and the time it took (or the time you are aiming for) and you get your pace per kilometre and per mile, your speed, and the treadmill setting that matches it - useful in winter when you would rather not run in the dark. It then predicts what the same fitness would do at 5k, 10k, half and full marathon using the Riegel formula, the standard used by most running calculators.

What is a good 5k time?

For UK parkrun, the average finish is around 29–30 minutes for men and 33–35 for women, across all ages. A first-ever 5k in 35–40 minutes is completely normal. Under 30 is the usual first target, under 25 is a strong recreational time, and under 20 is club-runner territory. The honest answer to "is my time good" is: better than last month is good.

Using pace to train, not just to measure

Most people run every run at the same medium-hard effort and wonder why they do not improve. Take your current 5k pace, then: most runs 60–90 seconds per km slower than it (easy, conversational), and once a week something at or slightly faster than it in short bursts. That mix - mostly easy, a little hard - is how everyone from beginners to elites actually gets faster.

Running and lifting together

They mix fine. Keep the hard run and the heavy leg day at least a day apart, eat enough (running quietly raises how many calories you need - the calories burned calculator will show you), and keep protein up so the mileage does not eat your muscle. The home workout plan pairs well with a couch-to-5k programme.

FAQs

What is a good 5k time for a beginner?

Finishing is the first goal. Most beginners run their first 5k in 35–40 minutes. Getting under 30 minutes is a realistic target after a couple of months of consistent running. UK parkrun averages are around 29 minutes for men and 34 for women.

What pace is a 30 minute 5k?

6:00 per kilometre, or about 9:39 per mile - roughly 10 km/h on a treadmill.

How accurate is the race time predictor?

Reasonably accurate between neighbouring distances (5k to 10k, 10k to half) if you have trained for the longer one. Predicting a marathon from a 5k time is optimistic for most people because endurance, not speed, becomes the limit.

What is a good running pace?

There is no single answer - it depends on distance and experience. For easy training runs, a pace at which you can hold a conversation is right, regardless of what the number says. Race pace is whatever you can sustain for that distance.
