Petrol station meal picker

Stuck with a forecourt for lunch? Pick a goal, a budget and what the shop has, and get three combos with the protein and calories that fit.

Three combos that work

Eating well from a forecourt is a picking problem, not a willpower problem

If you are in a van at 12:30 with £6 and a petrol station, the difference between a good meal and a bad one is what you reach for in the first thirty seconds. Every forecourt now has cooked chicken, boiled eggs, Greek yoghurt and a protein shake within a few feet of the pasties. This tool takes your goal, your budget and what the shop actually has, and runs every sensible combination of typical items to find the three with the best protein for the calories you want. It is the calculator version of our petrol station eating guide.

How the picks are chosen

Each option is scored on protein (up to about 70 g counts), how close the calories are to the goal - roughly 450 kcal for fat loss, 650 for a normal meal, 850 for building - a small bonus for including a proper main when you are not cutting, and a penalty for low-protein filler like crisps and pastry. Combos are limited to one main and one drink so you do not get "two sandwiches and a milk". With meal deal pricing on, a main, snack and drink are priced together at £4, which is typical for 2026 but varies by chain. Values are typical, not exact: a chicken sandwich can be anywhere from 320 to 480 kcal depending on the brand, so check the label when it matters.

The rules of thumb, if you want to skip the tool

One: protein first - chicken bites, eggs, yoghurt, a shake, jerky. Two: a drink with no calories, or milk if you are trying to gain. Three: fruit instead of crisps for the snack. Four: the hot counter's grilled chicken is the best-value protein in the building; the sausage roll is the worst. Five: if it comes in pastry, it is a treat, not lunch. Pair this with the protein calculator to know what your daily total should be.

FAQs

What is the healthiest thing to buy at a petrol station?

For protein: cooked chicken bites, boiled eggs, Greek yoghurt, a ready-to-drink protein shake, jerky or biltong. For a meal: a chicken or tuna sandwich or wrap with one of those on the side, fruit instead of crisps, and water or a sugar-free drink. The hot counter's grilled chicken pieces are usually the best value protein in the shop.

Can you build muscle eating from a petrol station?

Yes, if you hit your protein and total calories. A wrap, a pack of chicken bites and a 500 ml milk is around 860 kcal and 75 g of protein for under £8 - that is a proper muscle-building meal. What you cannot do is build muscle on sausage rolls and energy drinks, however many calories they have.

How accurate are the calories and protein figures?

They are typical values for UK forecourt and convenience items in 2026, not the figures for any one brand. Sandwiches vary by 100 kcal or more between shops. Use the tool to pick the pattern, then read the label on the actual item.

Is a meal deal good value for fat loss?

It can be, if you pick the right three things - a chicken sandwich, a fruit pot or yoghurt, and water is about 450 kcal and 25-40 g of protein. The same deal with crisps and a full-sugar drink is 300 kcal more for less protein.
