How steps turn into calories
Your stride is estimated from your height (about 0.41 × height is the usual figure), which gives a distance. Walking then costs roughly 0.5 kcal per kilogram of bodyweight per kilometre - a bit less pottering, a bit more marching. So a 90 kg person doing 10,000 normal steps covers about 7.4 km and burns around 350 kcal. Trackers that say 500+ for the same walk are counting the calories you would have burned anyway.
Is 10,000 steps the magic number?
No - it started as a marketing figure for a Japanese pedometer in the 1960s. The research shows health benefits climbing steeply from about 4,000 up to roughly 8,000 a day, then flattening. For fat loss, more is more, but the sweet spot for most working people is 8,000–10,000 because it is achievable without carving out extra time.
Why walking is the best fat-loss tool nobody rates
It does not make you hungry the way hard cardio does, it does not need recovery so it never gets in the way of lifting, and the table above shows what an extra 2,000–4,000 steps a day quietly adds up to across a month. If you drive a van or sit at a desk, this is where the easiest 150–250 kcal a day is hiding. Pair it with the calorie calculator and you have a plan.
FAQs
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
About 300–400 kcal for most adults - roughly 350 for an 80–90 kg person at a normal pace. Heavier people and brisk walkers burn more. Trackers often show higher because they include resting calories.
How many steps a day to lose weight?
There is no fixed number, but adding 2,000–4,000 steps to what you do now, without eating more, is worth around 0.5–1 kg of fat a month. Most people see results between 8,000 and 12,000 a day combined with a modest calorie deficit.
How far is 10,000 steps?
Roughly 7–8 km, or 4.5–5 miles, depending on your height and stride. Taller people cover more ground per step.
Is walking better than running for fat loss?
Running burns more per minute, but walking is easier to do daily, does not increase hunger as much, and does not interfere with recovery from strength training. For most people walking more is the easier win.
