How much does it cost to eat healthy in the UK in 2026?

7 min read · Build Me Different

"Eating healthy is expensive" is one of the most common reasons people give for not starting. Sometimes it is true. Usually it is a sign that the shopping is being done wrong. Here are real numbers for 2026.

What a high-protein week actually costs

For one adult aiming at roughly 130–150g of protein a day, eating mostly at home, a sensible weekly shop in 2026 looks like this:

  • Aldi / Lidl: £32–£42 a week.
  • Tesco / Sainsbury's / Asda, own brand: £38–£50 a week.
  • Same shop, mostly branded and pre-prepared: £60–£85 a week.
  • Meal-prep delivery services: £70–£120 a week for 5 days of lunches and dinners.

So the gap between "healthy" and "cheap" is mostly a gap between cooking and not cooking, not between healthy food and unhealthy food.

Where the protein money goes

Protein is the expensive macronutrient, so this is where to be clever. Cost per 25g of protein, roughly, in 2026:

  • Eggs: about 55–70p (4 eggs).
  • Chicken thighs: about 60–80p. Breast is 90p–£1.20.
  • Tinned tuna: about 70–90p.
  • Greek yogurt (big tub): about 60–75p.
  • Milk: about 45–55p (a pint is ~18g).
  • Lentils, dried: about 25–35p, though you need a lot of them.
  • Whey protein: about 60p–£1 a scoop depending on brand.
  • Mince, 5% lean: about 90p–£1.30.
  • Steak: £2–£4. Nice, not necessary.

Build most of your week from the top half of that list and the bill drops fast. Whey is convenient, not compulsory — see how much protein you actually need.

A £40 week, roughly

  • 30 eggs, 2kg chicken thighs, 500g lean mince — about £15
  • 1kg Greek yogurt, 4 pints milk, a block of cheese — about £7
  • Rice, oats, pasta, bread, potatoes — about £6
  • Frozen veg, bananas, apples, onions, a bag of salad — about £7
  • Tinned tomatoes, beans, tuna, sauces, spices — about £5

That covers three meals a day for seven days with protein at every meal. It is not glamorous. It works.

The expensive habits

  • Meal deals daily: £3.50–£4.50 a day is £25 a week on lunches alone, with less protein than the eggs you could have brought.
  • Protein bars and "high protein" snacks: £1.50–£2.50 for 15–20g. Yogurt does the same for a third of the price.
  • Takeaways as a plan: £12–£20 a time. Two a week is £30 that would have bought half the shop above.
  • Buying for a diet you won't follow. The kale and the quinoa that go off in the fridge cost more than the chicken you eat.

If you work on site or on shifts

The shop above assumes a kitchen and some time. Plenty of people have neither. The petrol-station guide covers what to grab at 6am when you have slept through the alarm, and the tradespeople guide covers the rest of the day.

Making it fit your week, not a template

The reason people spend £80 on a "healthy" shop and then eat toast is that the plan did not fit their life. An AI meal plan builds the week round the shops you use, the time you have and the training you are doing, and it rewrites it when your week changes. £19.99 a month for the meals and the training together, first 30 days free.

FAQs

How much should one person spend on food per week in the UK?

£35–£50 a week covers a high-protein diet for one adult cooking at home in 2026. Most of the cost above that is convenience.

Is it cheaper to eat healthy or unhealthy?

Per calorie, ultra-processed food is cheaper. Per meal, cooked-at-home food built around eggs, chicken, rice and frozen veg is usually cheaper than takeaways and meal deals.

Do I need supplements?

No. Whey is convenient if you struggle to hit protein from food. Creatine is cheap and well-supported. Everything else is optional.
