How steps become distance

Every step covers roughly 0.414 × your height - the rule most pedometers and fitness watches use when you have not measured your stride. For someone 178 cm tall that is about 74 cm a step, so 10,000 steps is about 7.4 km or 4.6 miles. Taller people cover more ground per step, which is why two people with the same step count can have walked different distances. If you know your own stride, put it in the override box; if you do not, walk 20 steps, measure the distance and divide by 20.

How distance becomes calories

Walking costs roughly 0.5 kcal per kilogram of bodyweight per kilometre on top of what you would burn standing still. That is the net figure: an 85 kg person walking 7.4 km burns about 315 kcal extra. Trackers that report 500 or more for the same walk are usually including the calories you would have burned anyway. Faster walking and hills cost a little more; it is an estimate, not a lab measurement. The steps to calories calculator takes this further with pace and what extra steps are worth over a month.

How many steps in a site shift?

More than most people think, and it depends entirely on the job. A labourer, groundworker or delivery driver on their feet can log 15,000-25,000 steps in a 10-hour day; someone on a bench or in a cab might be under 5,000. The shift mode gives you a rough band from hours and how much you move. Two things it does not tell you: whether the walking is enough on its own (it is good for your heart and your calorie balance, but it does not build strength), and how tired the rest of your body is from carrying, kneeling and lifting between the steps. That is why the training advice for tradesmen is a couple of short strength sessions a week, not more cardio.

FAQs

How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7 to 8 km, or 4.5 to 5 miles, for an average adult. It depends on your stride, which is roughly 0.414 times your height - a taller person covers more distance for the same steps.

How many steps is 5 km?

Around 6,500 to 7,500 for most adults, more if you are short or take small steps, fewer if you are tall. Enter your height above for a closer figure.

How many steps do you walk on a 10-hour site shift?

Commonly 15,000 to 25,000 for people on their feet all day - labourers, groundworkers, scaffolders, delivery drivers. Trades that work in one spot, or operators in a cab, can be well under 5,000. Wear a tracker for a week to get your real number.

How many calories does walking burn?

Roughly 0.5 kcal per kg of bodyweight per km, on top of resting. For an 80 kg person that is about 40 kcal per km or 300 kcal for 10,000 steps. Trackers often show more because they include resting calories.
